How to Evaluate an OEM Microinverter Sample Before a Pilot Order

A sample that powers a lamp is not yet an approved microinverter. An OEM buyer needs a repeatable acceptance plan that links the offered model, project configuration, documentation and later production units.

The goal is not to recreate a certification laboratory. It is to catch mismatches early, identify evidence that requires independent testing and create a controlled “golden sample” for the pilot order.

Stage 1: close the document gaps

Before energizing the unit, reconcile the quotation, label, datasheet, manual, wiring diagram and certificate schedule. Record model suffixes, rated input limits, AC voltage and frequency, firmware identity, communication method, operating-temperature range and enclosure rating.

Create an exceptions list. If a value differs across documents, the supplier should resolve it in a revised controlled document. Do not choose the most convenient number.

Stage 2: verify the physical configuration

Inspect housing finish, fasteners, mounting points, cable lengths, polarity marks, connectors, labels, serial traceability and carton contents. Compare the supplied accessories with the approved BOM.

Photograph all sides and interfaces. These images become part of the golden-sample record and help detect unapproved substitutions during pilot production.

Stage 3: run configuration-appropriate functional checks

Testing must use safe equipment, competent personnel and the manufacturer's instructions. A practical buyer-observation plan can include:

  • Startup and shutdown within the documented input and grid conditions
  • MPPT response at representative, permitted operating points
  • Output limit and monitoring command response where supported
  • Monitoring registration, data refresh and alarm visibility
  • Communication-loss and restart behavior
  • Off-grid output and charging functions only for models designed for them
  • Recorded temperature and output behavior during a controlled run

Do not improvise grid-fault, insulation, dielectric, anti-islanding or destructive protection tests. Those require appropriate laboratories, procedures and safety controls.

Stage 4: evaluate the buyer experience

Commission the sample using the exact instructions and account flow intended for the market. Note unclear translations, missing permissions, Wi-Fi onboarding problems, reset behavior and steps that would generate installer support calls.

Review the product range using the actual project module, not a convenient bench source alone. The solar module compatibility checklist defines the datasheet fields that should be signed off.

Build a pass/fail matrix

Gate Pass evidence Owner
Identity Model, label and document revisions match Procurement
Electrical fit Approved compatibility calculation Applications engineer
Functional behavior Signed observation record Qualified test team
Monitoring Commissioning and handover completed Technical support
Compliance Market-specific evidence verified Compliance lead
Packaging BOM and labeling accepted Product manager
Change control Supplier notification process agreed Quality lead

Every failure needs a disposition: correct and retest, accept with a documented condition, or reject. Verbal promises should not close an acceptance item.

From sample to pilot order

Seal and label one accepted unit as the golden sample. Freeze the BOM, firmware baseline, labels, manuals and packaging artwork. Define incoming inspection sampling, traceability fields, critical defects and the approval process for any change.

The microinverter batch acceptance sampling guide turns that pilot approval into a documented lot-by-lot release gate for later production shipments.

An approved sample reduces risk only when production is required to match it. Discuss the target market, module datasheet, evaluation resources and OEM scope with the TMG team before ordering samples; the team can prepare a model-specific document and test matrix for review.
